Stephen Sondheim is considered one of the most legendary musical theatre composers and lyricists of all time. His legacy spans across generations and is almost inconceivable in how vast it truly is. Every legendary composer has a specific sound to their music. Sondheim was no different. His musicals feature extremely rich and, most of the time, extremely complicated melodies. Most music is formulaic with its tempo and layout. Sondheim's music is anything but. The music of Stephen Sondheim is considered among the most difficult, not only to play, but also to sing as well. The way he played with rhythm, tempo, and conventions leaves his music among the most memorable in all of musical theatre and cements him as a true master of the craft.
Stephen Sondheim created some of the greatest musicals the world has ever seen. "Sweeney Todd" is a dark, haunting show about the depths a person will reach in their soul when they've been wronged and how far they're willing to go for revenge. The show features many legendary songs such as "My Friends", "Johanna", and "A Little Priest". "Company" is a show about one man's journey through adulthood, love, and attitude about marriage through a series of scenes with his married friends in the style of vignettes. The score is filled with incredibel songs such as "Company", "Being Alive", and "Getting Married Today" which is considered one the most chanllenging songs to sing in all of musical theatre. "Merrily, We Roll Along!" Is a show about a trio of friends who go through life's up and downs and the nature of ever changing friendships told in reverse chronological order going backward in time as the show moves forward. Featuring songs like "Old Friends", "Franklin Shepard, Inc.", and "Not a Day Goes By", this show remains one of the most heartfelt and cherished in musical theatre history.
